REF2021 Results

We are delighted and proud to have come 4th in the REF2021 for Mathematical Sciences, based on independent analysis by Times Higher Education

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a UK-wide assessment of university research carried out by the four UK higher education funding bodies. Its aim is to secure the continuation of a world-class, dynamic and responsive research base across the full academic spectrum within UK higher education.

The results for REF 2021 have now been published. The School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol is delighted and proud to have been ranked 4th in the UK for Mathematical Sciences research based on independent analysis by Times Higher Education. Our REF results highlight that 98% of our Mathematical Sciences research is either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of originality, significance, and rigour, with 70% of our submission given the highest score available. This result will enable us to continue to progress with our ambitions, inspired and sustained by the excellent research environment we have created.

As one of the UK’s powerhouses in the Mathematical Sciences, our research-led teaching will train future mathematical scientists who can contribute to the superb standards of mathematics locally and the UK, and to the global scientific community.

The University of Bristol’s overall REF 2021 results highlight the outstanding quality and impact of Bristol’s research across all subjects and disciplines. Bristol was ranked fifth overall in the UK by Times Higher Education, a rise of six places from 11th when the results of the last REF were published in 2014.
